Learning to Speak Irish

The internet is a remarkable thing. I have come to know some incredible people though this big ol' thing we call 'the web.' One such person is Carly Rodgers, a fabulous photographer across the pond in Ireland. We've struck up quite the friendship over the past few.... how long has it been? Months? A year? More? I've lost track! Not only have I enjoyed her charming Irish accent (even before we ever spoke on the phone, I could hear her voice pouring loud and clear through her emails), but I've even had the honor of mentoring her to help with the development of her own business. What fun! (She's every bit as darling on the phone as she comes across in email.... I love that!)

As a thank you, she sent me this unbelievably cool hand-painted gift! Merki and Emka's new friend comes complete with a KaBloom logo on the back of its head! Carly, you are amazing. Emir and I look forward to meeting you in person and sharing a Guinness in March!

Proud to be a Prendes

Growing up, I was always extremely proud of my Cuban heritage. Read: Extremely. Proud. Even as a very young kid, I always thought it was sooooooooo cool that my family spoke Spanish. I loved the way it sounded, how it rolled off everyone's tongues with such rhythm and rhyme. I loved the way my name sounded when they said it...... more like 'cada' than 'Khar-ra.' Being called 'Kharita' was the creme-de-la-creme of endearment.

It came as a complete susprise to find out that not everyone had regular family get-togethers involving maracas, tambourines, guitars and a chorus of aunts and uncles who in my mind were the best musicians the world had ever seen.

(We also recently lost my beloved uncle José Luís. He was the oldest of the eight children. I will always remember him for his warm smile, inquisitive nature, incredible brilliance, diplomacy and leadership. In real life, he was a celebrated neurologist, but when I was a kid, I thought he was a rock-star... I still have his album 'Los Tropicales' and remember him with love every time I listen. I love you Tio!)

We had hand-made piñatas, home-cooked ropa vieja, Agua de Violetas, and lunch at Abuela & Abuelo's on Sundays.

As I grew older and came to know the story of what it means to be a 'Prendes' and how my family came to be the strong, inspiring people they are...I felt a sense of honor and pride I previously didn't know was possible.

In preparation for Abuelo's funeral services, the photo albums (arm-loads upon arm-loads!) have resurfaced from the drawers and closets at Abeula's house. I've looked through many of them repeatedly over the years during countless Sunday afternoons visiting 'Los Chachis.' I don't know if I ever saw this one before, or if it just strikes me now because I'm older, but when I saw this photo of my mom with Abuelo, I had to do a double-take (as did everyone else). I've always been thrilled to think that I share some of my mom's features.... but the resemblance in this photo is uncanny.

Maybe it's the expression on her face. Maybe the darling bikini. Or simply the fact that she's standing with Abuelo.... whatever it is.... I can't get enough of it. I feel like when I look at this photo, not only can I see the light that I've always known as my mother shining through her bright eyes and smile, but.... I feel like it sums up so much of my family and myself.  Having come to this country with nothing but determination (and eight kids!).... their (our) lives sure are rich in the ways that matter  most.

Here's another fave from Abuela & Abuelo's wedding. I don't think it's humanly possible for either of them to have been more handsome. The beginning of "Los Chachis!"

May the music live on forever. :)

Los Chachis

No one is really sure what it means exactly, but mis Abuelos have referred to each other lovingly as 'chachi" for as long as I can remember. To say that they are incredible is to fall embarrassingly short of doing them justice. The things they have done, survived and triumphed above are things most often found in movies and literary works we'd like to think were fiction (perhaps, another blog post one day.....).

On October 10, 2009, after 80+ years of making everyone who has ever known him burst with love and pride, Jose Prendes departed our Earthly existence and is finally at peace.

I can still hear the jokes he would constantly tell, cracking himself up along the way.

Te quiero Abuelo... ayer, hoy y para siempre.

Squirrels: 82, Us: 1

You'd think the score would be a bit more even.... but those lil' squirrels are hard core! After nearly four years of enjoying our apple tree (and picking up the ruins the squirrels eat and toss on the ground), we finally had one they couldn't get their hands on. It stayed on the tree long enough to ripen and turn red. Truly a first at our place!

Ripe for the picking, I grabbed my camera and captured it. (Opportunity, like an apple, doesn't hang around forever!)

Two Syllables, or Three?

This time of year is my ABSOLUTE FAVE. When I'm not shooting, I love to visit one of the local farms and/or pumpkin patches. This year, after a fab love shoot session with Jennifer + Nick (coming up!), Emir and I hung out awhile longer to take advantage of the gorgeous day to be had at Roca Berry Farm. The main goal on my mind was to score my yearly quota of caramel apples. :) Best. Thing. Ever. Which brings me to the question, am I the only person who says 'carmel' instead of 'car-a-mel?' Is that a geographical thing like soda/pop? Either way, I already can't wait for next year!

All Smiles!

I'm sooooo grateful that amidst the frenzy that is my life this time of year, I managed to stop by Adis & Laura's house to catch up on the latest and greatest happenings with lil' Haris. He's somewhere around 5-ish months... and couldn't be squishier! 161514

I love that he's standing in this one (with some help from his Tata, of course!). He looks like such a little man!

Haris is a twin for his mom!

Emir couldn't resist getting in on some Haris time too! I **love** the expression on Haris' face here!

Studios Magazine: Eye Candy

Local creative guru and fabulous friend of ours Jackie Ostrowicki (and her drool worthy studio space!) are featured in the Fall 2009 edition of Studios Magazine. I had the honor of visiting her incredible space and snapping this photo. A drool worthy space indeed! To read the feature, click here for an enlarged copy. If you'd like  to check out the magazine in the flesh, you can pick it up at Barnes & Noble. Prepare to be inspired!

The Small Stuff

Boxes. Packaging tape. Shipments. Shoots. Edits. Deadlines.  Phone calls. Emails. Amongst the craziness of the busy fall season, I am making an extra effort to delight in the small stuff. You know what I'm talking about.... the sunshine that peeks through the clouds on a gorgeous fall day. The smell of crisp autumn leaves twirling from the tree tops (onto the lawn, awaiting a good raking), and of course.... the opportunity to wear boots, scarves and yummy sweaters! The past few days (weeks) are kind of a blur. In the middle of it, I found this little treat waiting for me on my front porch. The thank you card wasn't signed, so I can only guess what sweet and thoughtful person(s) left this... but I think I have a pretty good guess. :) Please know that you made my day! Maybe the small stuff isn't so small after all? :)

Thank you!

Santa Fe All the Way!

After shooting Christina & Jason's Destination Wedding in Denver, Emir and I hopped over to Santa Fe to explore for a couple of days. Neither of us had been there before and I've always been curious about the city known for it's art and culture.... so why not? We booked our hotel online (Hotel St. Francis) without too much thought and were thrilled with our choice. We were on the 3rd floor, this was the staircase.... santa_fe_03santa_fe_01

This was our room! (Love the white, fluffy bed!)

The next day we were thrilled to meet up with Peachpit's famed author, Robin Williams and her partner-in-crime, John.We rendezvoused at the well-known dining establishment, Harry's Roadhouse on Old Las Vegas Hwy. Too cool!

santa_fe_05

Collectively, Robin & John have been in the Santa Fe area for 40+ years... so they had all kinds of suggestions about where we should go and what we should do. One of the things they mentioned was making a trip south of Santa Fe to Madrid (pronounced Mahhhhh-drid) with a quick stop at Cerillos to visit the petting zoo and this curious little shop.... I shot Emir, and he shot the image on the right.

santa_fe_06santa_fe_07

They sold all kinds of interesting things, including old checks from the 1800's....

$5 'Rock Concerts'

and porcupine quills, because you *never* know when you might need some of those!

We continued on to Madrid where we found even more color, yummy, and curious things!

santa_fe_14santa_fe_12

Along the way, we found heaven!

Headed back north back to Santa Fe, I was struck at the scenery. I *love* this image.

santa_fe_15

When we got back to the hotel, we discovered this little treasure and Emir shot this image. You can't help but smile when you look at this, right?

santa_fe_16santa_fe_18

Wandering around on a quest for yet *more* caloric intake.... we landed at Luminaria. It was as delicious as it was beautiful!

In Santa Fe, even the bathrooms are photo worthy!

Our hotel was so bright and airy, the elevator was no exception!

On our way home soon to continue the wedding photo fun with Tara + Chris & Kim + Bob!

Drool Never Looked So Good

I have been looking forward to today for weeks. I got my little nephew Cole-Train all to myself for a good chunk of the day (in between two rockin' loveshoots!). He fell asleep in my arms while in our rocking chair. Pure heaven.  I'm hoping to have him for a whole week sometime this winter.... look at that doll face! 033

He has found his toes... and can't seem to get enough of them!

089

I'm just in love with this little face..... and I still can't get over how much he looks like his daddy (my brother)!

108Love ya Cole Train!
