Down the Aisle: Annette + Brandon {Destination Wedding - Grenada}

Oh my goodness! Where do I even begin? Emir and I were invited to spend an entire week in Grenada with Annette, Brandon and both of their families. The whole thing started when Annette saw one of my photos on her co-worker's desk. After a ping-pong match of emails and a couple of meetings, plans were hatched and tickets were booked! I knew this would be no ordinary wedding right from the start. Annette grew up in Canada, but has strong family ties in Grenada and visited often through the years. The island is the connection between a very widespread &  international family tree, so naturally, it was the perfect location for such a special event! Grenada is a magical place where time and space seem to exist in an entirely different dimension. Even coming from Nebraska where I'm often told by visitors that we're all overwhelmingly friendly.... I was still touched by the open hearts and constant smiles to be found in Grenada. At one point during Emir and I's wild ride through the city, we were hopelessly lost. When we stopped to ask for directions, rather than just pointing us in the general direction and sending us off, the gentleman kindly opened the door to our car, jumped in and gave us turn-by-turn advice from the backseat before jumping out as we passed his destination. Incredible!  I could go on for hours about the fascinating experiences we had and the amazing people we met while in the West Indies.... so if you ever really want the details, let me know. For now, suffice it to say that we had an incredible time, made loads of new friends, and hopefully created some images for Annette and Brandon to cherish for a lifetime. Here's a quick peek!

This is Reese. One heck of a great kid! He was all smiles the whole week. Here, he lets out some energy before getting dressed for the ceremony.

The ceremony was held on the beach on the southwest side of the island, right near Annette's dad's hotel. July is apparently rainy season in Grenada (and rain it did!). Despite a torrential downpour in the morning and early afternoon on their wedding day, the crew still managed to get everything ready in time for a sun-set ceremony. Amazing!

destination-wedding-photographer-05destination-wedding-photographer-15

This sweet little dog belongs to one of the hotel staff members who lives nearby on the beach. She enthusiastically joined us all for the ceremony and reception. :)

destination-wedding-photographer-07

This is Ann, the one-woman coordinator behind much of the planning and execution of the week's events. There's something very soulful about her. I love the way this image captures her spirit and mannerisms. Now, if only I could've recorded her melodic caribbean accent! :) She embodies my idea of the epitome of a Caribbean woman.... strong, vibrant, loving and always with a smile and kind word for everyone. We just adored her!

destination-wedding-photographer-06

The island is one of the world's largest exporters of things like nutmeg and rum. It's actually known as 'Spice Island.' So what kind of Grenadian party would be complete without some of the good stuff? :)

destination-wedding-photographer-09

There were so many beautiful people there! Guests came from Canada (Vancouver, Winnipeg and Montreal), the US (Seattle, Florida, Kansas), the UK (London), and of course, some locals who live on the island.  It was a celebration rich with culture, color and spirit.

destination-wedding-photographer-08

Shortly after our arrival early in the week, we came to understand the notion of 'island time.' I was somewhat familiar with this already with my mother being from Cuba, we often tease her side of the family about running on 'Cuban Standard Time.' Grenadian time is pretty similar.... The ceremony was originally supposed to start at 5:30pm. It got pushed back to about 6:30... and I think we were off and running by about 6:45. My only fear was the sun that continually crept towards the horizon... but everything came together to make it happen just in time for a glorious sunset.

As Annette was getting ready to walk down the aisle, this boat of on-lookers floated in the bay hoping to catch a glimpse....

destination-wedding-photographer-13

My favorite thing about this shot is the dog in the corner. She had the best seat in the house! :)

destination-wedding-photographer-14

The ceremony began with an ocean breeze in the background, carried by the notes from the steel drum... peppered with tears and laughter as Brandon + Annette made their way through their vows.

destination-wedding-photographer-10

Little Reese was very involved too. Here he reads a poem written with Annette for Brandon.

destination-wedding-photographer-12

Brandon, Annette and Reese gave each other necklaces to symbolize the creation of their new family of three. I love this symbolism!

destination-wedding-photographer-11

(lovin' all the active white space here!)

destination-wedding-photographer-23

After the ceremony and some quick family formals... the sun all but disappeared into the bay....

Party time!

destination-wedding-photographer-20

Annette's dad Len makes a toast to the newly married couple.

destination-wedding-photographer-18

The wedding was held on the 4th of July, which falls shortly after Canada Day (where much of her family is from). So we celebrated the wedding and two national holidays with one heck of a great party!

destination-wedding-photographer-19

I almost forgot! Annette asked me for a photo of the moon because when she was a kid, she and her uncle spent hours looking at and talking about it. He even gave her the nickname 'moon' at one point. I had actually never tried to photograph the moon before... so this was a first attempt! Not too shabby! ;)

destination-wedding-photographer-24

My goodness that was great! I hope with all my heart that you enjoy these photos as much as I enjoyed creating them. Thank you for inviting us to be part of the family for a week.... you will never be forgotten. Our new extended Grenadian family.....  :)

Grenada: Crab Racing and All!

What a fantastic set-up! Annette's dad's restaurant served as home base for the entire family (plus us - they treated us like family.... so great!) the week we were down there. We gathered for breakfast and dinner each day to share stories and swap jokes. The corner of the balcony was a sweet spot for picking up a nearby wi-fi connection. Emir's ipod touch was put to good use!

grenada_wedding_photographer_08

During our life-altering escapade behind the wheel on the left-hand side of the road.... we journeyed into St. George on our attempt to drive the outskirts of the island. Note: If you ever find yourself in Grenada with an itch to try your hand at driving.... wait until Sunday when the roads are less crowded. You'll thank me later! :)

grenada_wedding_photographer_12

A view of the port.....

grenada_wedding_photographer_13

As we made our way around the island, we encountered lots of little shops such as this. You could buy cell phone cards, coca-cola, and fresh mangoes pretty much everywhere!

grenada_wedding_photographer_11

When we first arrived to our room, we found this yummy treat waiting for us. I love the design of the wrapping paper....

grenada_wedding_photographer_09

During an outing to town we got thirsty and found some new things among the tried and true.... The middle drink is a peanut-butter juice box. Fantastic! And peach & mango milk? Who wouldn't want some of that? Yum! Starbucks? Well.... sometimes you just have a craving. (Note: Refreshingly, we did not actually see a Starbucks in Grenada. I bought this one at a Grenadian grocery store.)

grenada_wedding_photographer_10

One of the bonuses of spending the whole week on location is that we were able to be part of and document the rehearsal dinner. It was held at the family restaurant and included steel drums....

grenada_wedding_photographer_04

and.... a crab race, naturally!

grenada_wedding_photographer_03

A professional bookie arrived with a collection of athletic crabs. Each had a number written in chalk on its back. (We bet on the first race and won 2 Eastern Caribbean Dollars! (That's about.... $0.80 USD).

destination-wedding-photographer_48

Here, the boys look on as they try to decide which crab to bet on....

grenada_wedding_photographer_02

A large circle was drawn on the floor and the crabs were placed in the middle. When the bowl was lifted, the goal was to have your chosen crab be the first one to crawl outside the circle.

grenada_wedding_photographer_01

The competition was fierce! A real crowd pleaser for sure!

Pics from the actaul wedding coming soon!

Beach, Sun, & Snorkel

Greetings from Grenada! I'm on location in the Caribbean for Annette & Brandon's 4th of July wedding and couldn't wait to share some of these pics. We're staying at Annette's Dad's property the Grand View Inn and it's simply fantastic! We truly feel like part of the family and are thrilled to be documenting the beginning of their new adventure in only a few short days. So exciting! WAY more to come after the wedding, but here's a sneak peek of some of what I've captured so far with my lil' purse camera and the corresponding underwater housing.

I shot these just this morning at the beach behind where we're staying. We were the only ones there this morning.... heaven!

IMG_0088

In my earlier days, I was a competitive swimmer (I used to be quite serious about it actually!) I swam competitively from the age of 5 until I was about 15 or 16. Needless to say, it's been YEARS since I've trained in the water.... but Emir dared me to see if I still had the moves.... I'm kind of surprised actually! Not too bad! One of my strongest events was the 100yd butterfly and the 200yd IM. Here I demonstrate the butterfly stroke. :)

Today, we decided to hit the boats for some snorkeling. It was Emir's first time... too fun!

IMG_0098IMG_0102IMG_0135

Grenada is home to the famed Underwater Sculpture Garden. We found our way to some of the pieces....

IMG_0119IMG_0141IMG_0123

In Grenada, you drive on the left side of the street. Wednesday, we had the abitious thought that we'd score a car and drive the circumference of the island. So, our first stop was the neighborhood police station to get our official Grenadian driver's licenses. (The bowl of fruit you see in the corner is filled with wax apples. Delicious! The officers actually shared some with us!)

IMG_0012IMG_0011

We paid the required $15 US Dollar fee, and were given change in the local currency, the Eastern Caribbean Dollar. I'd never heard of it before... but it's beautiful! Look at the coin with the curved floral shape! Amazing!

IMG_0019

I'll spare you the details of our escapade driving the island on the left.... suffice it to say that we decided that we don't belong behind the wheel here. Ha ha! (Thankfully, the locals are among the nicest and most understanding people I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. They rescued us from ourselves countless times yesterday! Ha ha!) More to come upon our return!

Down the Aisle: Adam + Jill

These two re-define the phrase "happy in love." Watching them interact all day was a sweet delight! Thank you for inviting me to be part of your day guys.... and if I don't see you at the airport tomorrow (in the very, very a.m.), know that I am wishing you all the best for a safe and wonderful honeymoon! adam+jill05adam+jill04adam+jill06

Adam and Jill's wedding was held at Southwood Lutheran Church. It's a relatively new building with tons of great windows and natural light!

Down the Aisle: Zack + Alicia

Zack + Alicia were married in the darling south/eastern Nebraska town of Johnson. The only thing more beautiful than the peaceful countryside itself, was of course..... the bride. :) I never had the privilege of meeting Alicia or Zack before yesterday. Zack plays football for the Chicago Bears and with a crazy training schedule, they had to do most of their wedding planning (including working with me) from Illinois. What fun to finally get to meet them! The ladies got ready in the house next door to the church. What a cozy place!

Zack is quite the character. He has mastered the tough-guy look of the NFL, but, I love this photo next to Alicia on the porch swing where he was all smiles. (And what a gorgeous smile it is!)

Word up. This is true friendship: Girlfriends all the way.

lincoln-nebraska-wedding-photographer-16lincoln-nebraska-wedding-photographer-15

Alicia loves her bling (you did see her necklace above, right?). Her ring is nothing short of breath taking!

lincoln-nebraska-wedding-photographer-17

The reception was held at her parents house in Elk Creek, NE. They even managed to make the port-a-potty look beautiful!

The Shoot Shack was also in full effect! The wind inspired us to improvise a bit from our usual set-up. Way too many good things to post to this already massively huge sneak-peek. But here is perhaps my fave of faves....

lincoln-nebraska-wedding-photographer-33

Alicia's dad Mark is an electrician and along with her mom, Lois they set up the reception site, tree lights and all! Incredible job!

lincoln-nebraska-wedding-photographer-32Congratulations and best wishes to you both! Your wedding was fabulous and I hope you're basking in a happy post-celebration after glow! PS: Special shout out to Heidi the professional harpist Alicia + Zack hired for their ceremony: It was fabulous to see you again! Have a great summer!

Senior: Hilary

I rang in the class of 2010 with Hilary's help! Too much fun. These are some of my faves: senior-photographer-lincoln-nebraska-08senior-photographer-lincoln-nebraska-07senior-photographer-lincoln-nebraska-06senior-photographer-lincoln-nebraska-05senior-photographer-lincoln-nebraska-04senior-photographer-lincoln-nebraska-03senior-photographer-lincoln-nebraska-02senior-photographer-lincoln-nebraska-01

Just a heads up: I am currently *fully booked* for senior appointments through this summer and fall. If you are a die-hard and absolutely determined to rock the front of my camera, I may have a few openings available in March. Contact me for more info. :)

Down the Aisle: Brett + Sarah

A-Team all the way! It literally rained (different degrees of severity) all day today for Brett + Sarah's wedding.... but did they let it get them down? No way! This is a mega-post.... too much goodness to resist. You've been warned! :) nebraska_photographer_14 Here we head out for some portraits. (Notice that you can actually see the rain falling, and Sarah still has a smile on her face!)

nebraska_photographer_03

The wedding was at Country Pines, so we had lots of green, rustic stuff to play with!

nebraska_photographer_13

Isn't that flower in her hair just perfect??? It makes me want to marry Emir all over again so I can skip the veil and rock the flora...

nebraska_photographer_12nebraska_photographer_02nebraska_photographer_01nebraska_photographer_07nebraska_photographer_11nebraska_photographer_06nebraska_photographer_10nebraska_photographer_20

I LOVE these next two shots! The gentleman with the hat looked so interesting to me... and how could I resist anyone who shows up with a classic vintage treasure for a camera!

nebraska_photographer_19nebraska_photographer_05

Awe geeze.... do we have ta?

nebraska_photographer_22

Back-up was in full effect! :)

nebraska_photographer_21

Cute kiddo alert!

nebraska_photographer_18

I love the depth in this image from the ceremony...

nebraska_photographer_17

I get a lot of requests from peeps all around the country who are interested in tagging along with me on a wedding shoot. Yay for volunteer assistants! But what I have to warn you is..... it's not easy! Just ask Emir.... he comes with me every now & then and when he does, I am routinely in awe of the patience he has towards me. I'm so used to working alone, that I'm not very good just plain bad at knowing how to accept/manage help. (That, and.... I'll admit that it's hard to shake the many years I spent as a bossy big sister... but I AM working on it! ;) Emir, you are a saint. Thank you for putting up with me! I love you, love you, love you!!!!

nebraska_photographer_28

So here I was trying to get some shots of our lovely bride and groom.... and.... here's Evan. When I tried to take his photo earlier (see above), he wasn't having it. And here, during the middle of the ceremony, he couldn't get enough of me! :)

nebraska_photographer_16

Evan worked the camera for quite awhile before his attention was diverted... leaving me with a clear shot.  (Well.... that.... and I just came in for a close-up. Evan is only so tall you know! ;)

Thanks so much for your cooperation and willingness to work with the rain, instead of against it! :)

Down the Aisle: Andy + Kristin

What a lovely day for a wedding! And the way things looked all morning and into the late afternoon, who would've guessed? Here's a sneak peek at all the fun I had with these two and their families today!

A young couple, I'm pretty sure their entire wedding party was of the single variety.... Check out all the fish in the sea for the bouquet toss! (It may be hard to see, but that crowd was DEEP!) I hope the gentlemen took good notes! :)

nebraska_wedding_photographer_143nebraska_wedding_photographer_133nebraska_wedding_photographer_114nebraska_wedding_photographer_104

It's pretty out of order for me to include this image from the ceremony here.... but before I call it a night, I just had to give a shout out to the ladies who comprised this incredible chorus. All friends of Kristin and Andy..... their sound was absolutely sublime! Nicely done ladies!

nebraska_wedding_photographer_094

Down the Aisle: Drew + Jamiee

When you want to go where everybody knows your name.... forget 'Cheers.' Head to Snyder. The small town charm was off the charts for Jamiee and Drew's wedding! Jamiee grew up in the house down the street from the church they were married at, across the street from her grandparents and only a stone's throw away from her elementary school. The family business is located behind the house... and just behind the business... is the reception hall. Everything you need, right in one spot! As we walked through the streets, residents were quick to honk their horns or even dash out their front door to say hello and give a wave (surely right before they joined us at the church for the ceremony!). I imagine that they've all enjoyed watching Jamiee grow up as life passed by on Oak Street. Today, it was one big, huge, happy family celebrating the beginning of Jamiee and Drew's next adventure!

Jamiee's family and friends did an amazing fantastic outrageous job of decorating the reception hall. It was truly transformed. Paper lanterns are always pho-tastic! :)
