Down the Aisle: Mallory + Sean

Sean and Mallory's wedding was a  reminder of why I love my job and continue to do what I do. Getting to see two people embrace a new life together, surrounded by family and friends who love and support them—does magical things to your heart.

I was kinda obsessed with the tile pattern on the squeaky clean bathroom floors. Mal's cute toes make a lovely addition.

Sean made this cool headboard. Pretty sweet, eh?

This is their jaw-droppingly awesome new home. What a charmer! I adore the old-fashioned address numbers on the house, with the address written out, "Twelve Thirty Three."

Then it was on to the church where Sean was getting ready...

Sean's brother Collin is serving in the Armed Forces, currently in Kuwait. He got to watch the whole ceremony via Skype!

Even though Collin couldn't be there in person, he was very much a part of the celebration. Here, his mom Wendy says hello.

Why let vast distances keep you from giving a toast at your brother's wedding? Collin chimed in with a heart felt message for his brother via a prerecorded message.

It was well received. :)

Sean and Collin's mom was touched, as were we all.

You did it! Congratulations you two. And thank you for sharing your heart's joy with me.

Love Shoot: Karen + Jason

Eighty acres! Say what?! These two love birds are planning their dream house on a whopping eighty acres of heaven a few miles north of town. Right now the property is filled with rolling hills, a pond, Karen's dad's fishing boat, and a tree swing carved with "Karen & Jason: Happily Ever After." (Obviously made with love.) I almost burst into tears when Karen told me how her parents surprised them with the swing. (I'm a sucker for sentimental things like that. When I moved to LA a billion years ago, my dad gave me a jar of dirt from my parents' yard with a label that said "You're Always Close to Home." Talk about a tear jerker!)

I can't wait to meet the rest of their families when their big day arrives in just a couple months!

Down the Aisle: Melissa + Etienne

Being as it was a balmy 70 degrees, in March, I'd say Melissa & Etienne already have some serious luck on their side, St. Patty's Day or not! :)

Getting ready in the morning, Melissa was all smiles...

This little cutie was playing hard to get all morning long...

But eventually I got her... these black and whites may be my faves...

Oh how I've missed chasing the Grandpas with my camera! :) What a doll!

Grandparents are the best!

Of course, the kiddos are fun too!

First dance yumminess...

Congratulations you two! May you have all the happiness and luck that life can hold—and at the end of all your rainbows, may you find a pot of gold! ;)

Giving Your Photos a Life Beyond Instagram and Facebook

(This post is part of a 2-part series on iPhone photo apps. The first was a round-up of my favorite iPhone photo apps.) Part of what makes our phone-cameras so handy is that they're with us everywhere. Most folks would agree that having a camera in your pocket at all times allows you to capture your life in a way that you never did before, including glorious sunsets, an especially amazing meal, laughable moments with our pets, and nearly every adorable thing our kids do. The ability to take photos at any given moment has the power to magically transform even the most mundane activities of daily life into photographic treasure, thereby allowing you to relive the fun at any time, while giving future generations a very insightful glimpse into your life. Pretty darn amazing.

Of course, if these photos never make it past your hard drive (or "the cloud"), in a sense—it's almost as if they don't really exist (for future generations at least). And what's especially tragic, is that sentencing your photos to a fruitless eternity spent decaying in the digital abyss of your hard drive is entirely avoidable Your phone, combined with Instagram, make it fantastically easy (even fun!) to give your images the chance to live on in the real world.

Below is a summary of various apps and websites I've used to ensure that my Instagram images will be around long enough to give our future kids an idea of who their parents were when we were young, or at least—to give them a good chuckle.

Blurb I love Blurb and make Blurb books on a regular basis. Perhaps the awesomeness of merging your Instagram photos with Blurb is best summed up in this great clip of multimedia journalist Richard Koci Hernandez.

Stickygram Who doesn't love magnets? Especially when they have your photos on them? Makes a great gift, and crazy fun to receive in the mail. Not sure if this code still works, but it saved me 15%: SOMETIMESSWEETPROMO Good luck!

Printstagram Prinstagram offers stickers, minibooks, and posters (among other things). The mini-books are fun, but aren't as large, robust, or high quality as a Blurb book. Of all their products, I like the stickers best.

Postagram Postagram makes it possible to turn one of your photos into a postcard, and send it from your phone. We used this service often while on the road with The [UN]tour. The results? Mixed reviews. Most of the postagrams we sent arrived without incident, but others were dramatically delayed, by as much as two months. Verdict? Still a very fun app. Just don't use it for something urgent or extremely important.

Fun feature? The photo "pops out" to easily be added to your recipient's fridge, bulletin board, etc.

PostalPix If regular old fashioned prints are what you're looking for, PostalPix is for you! Ordering is simple, directly from your phone.

A Few of My Favorite iPhone Photo Apps

The iPhone4 came to Sprint literally just in time for Emir and I to leave on our cross-country UNtour. (Our pre-ordered phones were delivered while I was shooting a wedding on Friday, just a day-and-a-half before we left town on Sunday—phew!) We dove right in and discovered a few various apps that have since become go-to favorites. Here's a quick overview. Instagram: This app is hands-down my favorite photo sharing app. In addition to being a social network all its own, Instagram also has it's own built-in filters/effects that make it easy to have fun with your images before posting them to share with the world. I also like that I can post directly from Instagram to Facebook and Twitter as well.

I'm not a fan of using Instagram to capture the photos though, as the built-in camera app leaves much to be desired. But it definitely is my app of choice for posting to the world.

Are you an Instagram lover? Connect with me! My user name is kplicanic.

PS: Instagram doesn't have a desktop interface, but you can use desktop apps like Statigram to view your feed on your desktop (though I'm yet to find a desktop app that lets you post to Instagram).

SnapSeed: This is my favorite app for actually editing the photos I take on my phone. It takes a moment to figure out how it works, but it is AWESOME.

DipTic: This is the app I use for most of my iphone collages. It's super easy to use and produces nice clean grids in a variety of layouts.

Camera Awesome: A simple app, Camera Awesome is a great replacement for Apple's built-in Camera app. Some people like Camera+ for the added control it gives you, but I have found it to be cumbersome and very frustrating to work with (not to mention that I don't care for the design of the interface).

Conversely, Camera Awesome does a great job of allowing you touch screen control over separate points for both your focus and your exposure, which isn't possible in Apple's built in Camera app.

Camera Awesome offers some processing options too, which is always fun. Having literally just downloaded the app, I haven't had the chance to play with them all yet, but it's looking promising. I'm guessing that this will be my go-to app at least for image capture, and possibly for processing as well.

Apple's Built-In Camera App It's not the most robust app, but when you're in a hurry, nothing beats the speed with which you can launch it. Did you know that when your phone is locked, if you just double-press the home button, you'll see the camera icon appear next to the slider bar? Sweet, right? Then, instead of dragging the slider bar to unlock your phone, you can just tap on the camera icon itself, and it will take you directly to the camera app. (This is the main reason why it's still the app I reach for first for image capture.)

UPDATE: The new iOS update has added the camera app icon directly to the unlock screen, whether your double-press or not.

Pro HDR Though I have definitely not jumped onto the HDR bandwagon, there are definitely occasions where certain images simply wouldn't be possible without it.

If you're not familiar with HDR, it stands for "High Dynamic Range." Because cameras aren't able to capture the full range of tones that we're able to see with our eyes, in scenes where there are dark shadows combined with very bright highlights, you're forced to choose which ones to capture, either the highlights, or the shadows. HDR images are created by combining two or more exposures (one for the highlights, one for the shadows) into a single image. They've gained a lot of popularity in recent years, but they generally aren't my style. But—when you find yourself in a situation that calls for a higher than usual dynamic range, Pro HDR is definitely the app to reach for!

SquareReady As I already mentioned, I'm a pretty big fan of Instagram. One of the fun things about Instagram is that everything it exports is in a square format, which I'm also generally a fan of. But now and then there are some compositions that simply do not work as a square, and the only way to be able to share them in Instagram without having to crop them, is to prepare them ahead of time with something like SquareReady. It works by adding in a background  as "filler" so that the whole final piece (photo + added background) is a square. Then, it's ready for Instagram!

(It's hard to see in the image below because it was "Squared" by adding a white background, but you should be able to see a faint grey border around the edge of the image. In either case, the image below illustrates this more clearly with the addition of a black background.)

Percolator This app is just plain fun! You can use it to re-interpret your images in all kinds of various ways.

Montage This app is fun for combining bits and pieces of various photos into a single collage. It's amazing what you can pull off with just your fingers! (You'll notice that I used one of the above images created with Percolator as the background in the montage I created.)

Juxtaposer Think you need your desktop to be able to remove backgrounds and combine images? Think again! This app lets you work with layers in a way that's very similar to Photoshop... all from your phone!

In the example below, I used the same Percolated background and added a photo of a British taxi cab that I shot while in London. (Not bad when you consider that I cut it out of the background using only my finger!)

A Word About iPhone Photo Workflow There is no right or wrong. The way you decide to work with you images will largely be decided by what kinds of images you're working with and what plans you have in store for them.

My current workflow is to capture an image on my phone using either the built-in Camera app, or the newest addition to my app collection, Camera Awesome. Then I open the image in SnapSeed, process it to my liking, save back to the Camera Roll, then share with the world via Instagram.

That said, every situation and every image is different (just like when I'm shooting professionally with my big girl camera). The more you play around, the more you'll find what works for you. Sometimes I build a grid with DipTic after using SnapSeed. Sometimes I use SnapSeed, then DipTic. And sometimes I just jump straight to Instagram.

Either way, the point is to have fun, so don't forget that! :)

Stay Tuned for Output Options! One of the things I stress in the various classes I teach is the importance of outputting our work and our memories. As awesome as it is to share our images on Facebook, Instagram, etc., for the sake of posterity, we really should be doing something more tangible. Stay tuned for a follow up post sharing some of my favorite ways to bring your iPhone photos to life!

It's My WPPI! (And It's Your WPPI too!)

This time of year isn't just for the Super Bowl, hot apple cider, and new fitness aspirations. In the photo industry, the winter months are prime conference time!

Having recently returned from SWPP in London, I'll soon be boarding another plane and heading west to Vegas for WPPI. This year is ultra exciting as my Master Class (limited to only 35 people) has been bumped up to a Platform Class which means we'll have more room for more people who want to get a grip on their workflow and embrace InDesign! Wahoo!

If you've never been to WPPI before, you're in for a treat! With more than 15,000 photographers in one place, you know it's going to be a good time! Just remember to wear comfortable shoes! :)

My class is on the schedule for Tuesday, Feb.  21st, 3:30-5:30pm and I hope to see you there!

Down the Aisle: Abby + Jason

Beginning a new year as a new family makes for a very special 2012. Congratulations to Abby and Jason on the start of what will surly be an exciting adventure! (And I'm not just talking about Hawaii!) xoxo,

Khara & Emir

At one point during the day, while I was outside photographing the adorable ring bearer, Emir was inside shooting the rings and caught this gem. A reflective surface and some Christmas lights makes for one heck of a yummy ring shot!

I love so many things about this image; the light, the line of Abby's hand/arm/dress, Jason dancing with his mom in the foreground—but especially, the look on the flower girl's face. :) You're a hoot Sam!

A little mother/son moment, taken right to the heart...

Happy New Year!

The third of her sisters to get married in the past 9 months, I hope the Chelohas can finally relax and enjoy their newly expanded family in 2012—congratulations to you all!
